Shut in is the process of closing the well in a controlled manner,in case of positive kick signs are observed.shut in well can be carried out in two ways in case of self flow.They are:-

  1. Soft shut-in
  2. Hard shut – in

Shut in well can be done while drilling and also at the time of tripping, when a positive kick sign is found.shut in is carried until pressure of shut-in drill pipe pressure (siidpp),shut-in casing pressure(sicp) get stabilise.

Soft shut-in

During the time of drilling

  • As the first step rotary table should be stop.
  • Clear the tool joint by picking up kelly above rotary table.
  • As the next step mud pump should be stopped.check if there is any self flow to the shale shaker,if there is self flow.close the well by following steps:-
  • Open hcr (hydraulic control) valve or manual valve on chock line.
  • As the next step close blow out preventer(mostly annular preventer)
  • Monitor casing pressure ,by gradually closing adjustable choke valve
  • Make pressure to stabilse and note sidpp,sicp record and pit gain

During the time of tripping 

  • As the first step tool joint should be lifted above rotary table and set drill pipe or bha on slips.
  • Full opening safety valve (fosv) should install in open position and close the valve of fosv.after that close the well by following steps:-
  • Open hcr (hydraulic control) valve or manual valve on chock line.
  • As the next step close blow out preventer(mostly annular preventer)
  • Adjustable choke should be closed gradually, and note down the casing pressure.
  • Kelly should make up with pipe joint and fosv should be open.
  • Make pressure to stabilse and note sidpp,sicp record and pit gain

Hard shut-in

During the time of drilling

  • As the first step rotary table should be stop.
  • Clear the tool joint by picking up kelly above rotary table.
  • As the next step mud pump should be stopped.check if there is any self flow to the shale shaker,if there is self flow.close the well by following steps:-
  • In this blow out preventer is closed first(mostly annular preventer)
  • Open hcr (hydraulic control) valve or manual valve on chock line when the choke is in fully closed condition.
  • Make pressure to satbilse and note sidpp,sicp record and pit gain

During the time of tripping

  • As the first step tool joint should be lifted above rotary table and set drill pipe or bha on slips.
  • Full opening safety valve (fosv) should install in open position and close the valve of fosv.after that close the well by following steps:-
  • Open hcr (hydraulic control) valve or manual valve on chock line.
  • As the next step close blow out preventer(mostly annular preventer)
  • Adjustable choke should be closed gradually, and note down the casing pressure.
  • Kelly should make up with pipe joint and fosv should be open.
  • Make pressure to satbilse and note sidpp,sicp record and pit gain
